Questions people ask

What details do I need to make a kundli?

You need your date of birth, your time of birth and your place of birth. These three decide everything in a janam kundli: the date fixes where the grahas stood, the time fixes the lagna (rising sign) and houses, and the place fixes the local time zone and sunrise. Ask a parent or check the birth certificate or hospital record for the exact time. Mera Guru Ji makes the kundli free from these details, and if you do not know the time it still makes a chart and tells you what may be off.

How accurate is a free kundli?

The positions in a kundli are exact astronomy: where each graha stood at your birth can be calculated precisely, and a free kundli is as precise as a paid one if the birth details are right. What is tradition, not measurement, is the reading: what a lagna, a house or a dasha means comes from Vedic texts and the judgement of the reader. Mera Guru Ji calculates the chart from your birth details with fixed astronomical rules and the Lahiri ayanamsa, not with AI, so the same birth details always give the same chart. The guruji then explains it in plain words.

Can I make a kundli without birth time?

Yes. Without a birth time a kundli is usually made for sunrise on your birth date. Your Moon sign (rashi) and nakshatra normally stay correct, because the Moon moves slowly enough that a few hours rarely change them. The lagna and the houses can be wrong, since the lagna changes about every two hours, so anything that depends on them is uncertain. Mera Guru Ji says this plainly instead of hiding it. If you can find even an approximate time from family, use that and the chart improves.

What does a kundli show: houses, planets, nakshatra, dasha?

A kundli shows the sky at your moment of birth, drawn as a chart. It has your lagna, the twelve houses (bhavas), the nine grahas and the sign each one sits in, your Moon sign and your janam nakshatra. It also gives the Vimshottari dasha, the timeline of planetary periods that Vedic astrology uses to see which graha is running in your life now. Mera Guru Ji shows all of these in the free kundli, and your guruji reads the same chart with you when you ask a question.

How do I read a North Indian kundli chart?

In a North Indian chart the houses are fixed in place and the signs move. The top central diamond is always the first house, the lagna, and the other houses are counted anticlockwise from it: second house to its left, then downwards. The small number in each box is the sign, and the grahas sit in the box of the house they occupy. Start with the lagna, then look at which grahas are in which house. The South Indian style is drawn differently but says the same thing, and the app lets you switch between the two.

What if my birth place is a small town or village?

Pick the nearest city or large town to your birthplace. The place is used only for latitude, longitude and time zone, and a difference of a few tens of kilometres changes the local time by a minute or two, which almost never changes the planets and rarely changes the lagna. If your birth time is right at the edge of a lagna change, which a good astrologer would also flag, a nearer place helps. For most people the nearest city gives the same chart as the village would.

Why is my moon sign different here than in the newspaper horoscope?

Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and your rashi is your Moon sign, while newspaper and magazine columns usually print your Western sun sign. They are two different things, and the sidereal zodiac also sits roughly 24 degrees behind the Western one (the Lahiri ayanamsa), so even the same body often lands in a different sign. Mera Guru Ji uses the Vedic method, so the Moon sign shown in your kundli is your Chandra rashi, the one a pandit would name, which may differ from the sun sign you know.

How do I get my kundli in the app and talk to a guruji about it?

Fill in your birth details on this page, then install the Mera Guru Ji Android app from Google Play and your kundli opens there, so there is nothing to type twice. The details you type on the website are kept for 7 days only so they can open in the app, and then deleted. In the app you choose one of the six gurujis and ask in Hindi, Hinglish or English. They read your own chart, not a generic horoscope. The app is for adults (18+), and an iPhone app is not available yet.
